Local Preachers’ Group on Hymns and Worship Songs

Notes of meeting held 19th January 2009

We began by singing 'Lord Jesus, in the days of old'.

Five members met, our purpose on this occasion being to consider how to respond to the consultation list for the proposed new hymn book. Since the December meeting members had had time to examine the list with care. All had noted a number of loved hymns that were not on the list. There were also 'new' hymns/songs whose inclusion was welcomed. Some had been puzzled at the placing of some items in sections of the new book where they would not expect to find them.

We scanned over all of the sections and discussed whether each had a sufficient range of choices, identifying sections which seemed weak or limited, and discussed how we would answer the questions posed in the connexional consultation.

It was agreed that John S. would frame a response on behalf of the group in the light of this and previous discussions and circulate it within the group for approval before submitting it.

The group decided that it had accomplished the purposes for which it had met, and that no further meetings would be held. All had appreciated the warmth of the fellowship we have felt in this short series of meetings. We closed with 'Father of everlasting grace'.

Subsequently a draft letter was circulated, and after some amendments had been made in response to email correspondence, seven preachers agreed to endorse it. The letter was sent to the Connexion on 2nd February. Click here for the text.
